What’s The Point?

Hmmm, where to start…

What’s the point…..

I haven’t really touched my website for over 12 months… you see..I’ve been busy…working which isn’t really such a bad thing when you’re self-employed right? (How many generalisations, deletions and distortions in there eh?)

There is a conundrum in business  (O.K. I’ll own it)…

I have a conundrum… when do you ‘do’ marketing?.. when you do business development?… when do you work?, do you continue doing what you’re doing or do you stop doing what you’re doing to start doing something yet in doing something do actually nothing as when you’re doing that then this isn’t getting done so therefore in reality who’s doing what?

My head hurts with that one.. until now.

I’ve just spent two days with a management team and together we’ve had a journey of development which resulted in the creation of a joint team vision, measurable and attributable actions with a lot of thought and self-reflection along the way.

This got me thinking….

Over the last 24 months I’ve been extremely fortunate to be involved in with international, national and regional management teams and realise that I’ve had two key themes along the way:

  1. What’s the point?
  2. Be the change you want the world to see

The first one comes from Robert Dilt’s Logical Levels. Everyone I speak to in HR and Learning and Development has a model which resonates with them and they consciously or unconsciously and Dilt’s model has sat with me since I started in my own personal development and works for me across many any context.

The second came from a friend of mine, Matt Hudson, who was my first real influence in personal development when I went along to one of his courses and evolved from trainer to mentor and is someone who i continue to learn from on a daily basis.

What’s the point?

So, what’s the point I hear you read?

  1. I have spent the last two years with management teams across many regions and I always start with purpose. i quote the late  great Stephen Covey and Mr Dilts and encourage teams to consider to ‘seek first to understand’ and also establish their identity and purpose as without this all you have is actions that mean nothing. i revisited my site today from an alternative perspective and found a site that had sat for a long while…….
  2. Be the change you want to see…. For me I seek to grasp effectiveness  which normally entails working with senior management teams  and encouraging  them to personally develop and experience their development cascading  down. Tonight my filters have led me to consider that perhaps there is a bit of hypocrisy in my post as I’ve not kept up my site so how can I encourage communication if I’m not communicating myself?

Through this thought process and self-reflection I re-visited my website and realised that the purpose that I set it up for was no longer relevant and therefore I hadn’t revisited or updated it for some time.

I’d like to thank the SSB team as I’ve reflected on my time with you, gone back to my vision and would like to state that this site has a purpose after all!

I solemnly swear to use this site to have a bit craic, document my journey, ask a few questions, maybe rant a bit and also ask a question or two that may or may not encourage comments, thoughts or contemplation…

I always will state that this site will not…

blatantly be used as a marketing tool and be neglected..

Virtual high five to you all!
